Frederick Gietz (PhD Candidate) was a guest on the Learn Real Good Podcast, a science-comedy podcast! His episode, "Teaching Semantics to Computers with Frederick Gietz" talks about teaching computers how to use verbs in the many complex ways humans do. As Gietz uses semantic and psychological theories to better understand language processing, he made for an excellent and engaging podcast guest!

Nathan on Word to the Whys

Nathan Sanders (faculty) has recently been featured on Word to the Whys, which is a podcast created by a collective of linguistics instructors in Canada. In this episode, 'Why we do phonetics', Catherine Anderson (McMaster University) interviews Nathan about his research, particularly as involving phonetics and sign languages. Ai and Julie on Words to the Whys

Ai Taniguchi (faculty) has recently been featured on Word to the Whys, a podcast produced by a collective of introductory linguistics instructors in Canada. In her episode, 'Why we do semantics', Ai is interviewed by Julie Doner (Ph.D. 2019) about what semantics is, how she took an interest, what it means for languages and dialects to make sense, and why we put a plural suffix on 'zero chairs' even though there aren't any. Sali A. Tagliamonte (faculty) is featured in episode 352 of the linguistics podcast Talk the Talk, hosted by Daniel Midgley (University of Western Australia). They discuss the word 'wait' in present-day English and its ongoing development into a discourse marker as in "wait, what?".

Lex on TVO's Word Bomb

Ph.D. student Lex Konnelly is featured in the sixth episode of TVO's Word Bomb - "the podcast that explodes today's most-talked-about words and brings you stories the dictionary doesn't tell you." Starting at 3:08, Lex discusses both their own experiences and their ongoing research into the singular they pronoun in English and its sociopolitical surroundings: the increasing recognition and acceptance in the Western world that not all human beings fit into a binary gender classification. "When you're referring to somebody else, that's one of the most political things that you can do...pronouns are a very important part of that."
